Isaac Bashevis Singer: Before Everything Else a Writer

  • Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, Celeste Auditorium 476 Fifth Avenue (42nd St and Fifth Ave) New York, NY, 10018 USA (map)

We are so delighted that Ilan Stavans, Publisher of Restless Books, will be participating in a celebration of the Nobel-Prize winning writer, I. B. Singer at the Celeste Auditorium of the New York Public Library on Wednesday, October 10 at 6:30pm.

For the first time ever, this fall a vast collection of original Yiddish works by I. B. Singer, will become freely available online through the Yiddish Book Center’s Steven Spielberg Digital Yiddish Library.

In honor of this newly accessible collection, several contemporary prominent writers and scholars will be in conversation and discuss the question, “Isaac Bashevis Singer: Time for a Reappraisal?” The featured speakers include: Rivka Galchen, Rebecca Goldstein, Anita Norich, Eleanor Reissa, David Stromberg, and Restless’s very own Ilan Stavans.

“I have a Yiddish typewriter which is very capricious and highly critical,” Isaac Bashevis Singer said. “If this typewriter doesn’t like a story, it refuses to work.”
