About the Book
Did you know that every year, millions of children have to leave their homes behind? Sometimes a flood or a drought makes their homes unsafe. Sometimes a war breaks out and forces whole communities to flee.
When two small children set out to find a safer place to live, they decide to do the impossible: they carry their homes with them. One child uses a magic spell to shrink their house; the other's house becomes so big and strong it can protect them and everyone else who is moving to a new life, too.

Praise for Home Is a Door We Carry
“Moscow-born author/artist Satüpo, who now lives in Berlin, creates vibrant spreads, favoring earthy tones, combining naïve drawings with textured cutouts, and collaging with childlike simplicity. Writing in unadorned prose, he captures the ubiquitous plight of children fleeing natural disasters, socioeconomic uncertainty, political upheaval, and—far too often—war. Fifty million kids, he notes, were displaced in 2024; kindness, he reminds us, can create welcoming safety. . . . Deftly captures the challenging uncertainty of leaving home and the eventual hope of belonging.”

About the Author and Illustrator
Constantin Satüpo was born in Moscow. He graduated from the University of Printing Arts, and moved to Berlin to study visual communication at the Academy of Arts of Weissensee. He has written and illustrated several children’s books, including graphic novels. From 2019 to 2022, he collaborated on an art program benefiting organizations that support refugees. Since the beginning of Russia’s war against Ukraine, he has met children who were forced to leave their homes. He wanted to tell the stories of these children who, all at once, lost everything they knew: going to school, meeting with friends, taking music classes, playing sports — and most importantly, staying with their families in the homes they love. Constantin lives and works in Berlin with his wife, who is from France, and their children. Together, they have made a new home where they speak three languages (German, Russian, and French) on a daily basis.
