On Sunday September 17, Fernanda Torres, author of The End, will be in Brooklyn for the Brooklyn Book Festival. Fernanda will be participating in a panel presented by WORD Bookstores alongside Bonnie Huie and moderated by Jessie Chaffee.
Fernanda Torres was born in 1965 in Rio de Janeiro. The daughter of actors, she was raised backstage. Fernanda has built a solid career as an actress and dedicated herself equally to film, theater, and TV since she was 13 years old, and has received many awards, including Best Actress at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival. Over the last twenty years, she has written and collaborated on film scripts and adaptations for theater. She began to write regularly for newspapers and magazines in 2007 and is now a columnist for the newspaper Folha de São Paulo and the magazine Veja-Rio and contributes to the magazine Piauí. Her debut novel, The End, has sold more than 200,000 copies in Brazil.
Bonnie Huie is a translator of Chinese and Japanese. Her most recent work is Notes of a Crocodile, Qiu Miaojin’s coming-of- age novel about queer friendship in late-’80s Taipei, published by NYRB Classics. She received a PEN/Heim Translation Fund grant, and her rendition of Motojirō Kajii’s story Under the Cherry Blossoms was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
Jessie Chaffee is the author of the debut novel Florence in Ecstasy and an editor at Words Without Borders. She was awarded a Fulbright grant to Italy to complete the novel and was the writer-in-residence at Florence University of the Arts. Her writing has been published in Literary Hub, The Rumpus, Electric Literature, Slice, and Global City Review, among others.
