The Kellman Prize for Immigrant Literature

In 2015, the Restless Books Prize for New Immigrant Writing was created to honor outstanding debut literary works by first-generation immigrants whose work examines how immigration shapes our lives, our communities, and our world.

For the tenth anniversary of the prize, Restless Books’ unstintingly generous board member, Steven G. Kellman—whose grandparents were immigrants to the United States—endowed the prize so that it may continue in perpetuity. The award will now be known as the Kellman Prize for Immigrant Literature.

The winner receives $10,000, a writing residency from Millay Arts, and publication by Restless Books.

“Restless Books is all about opening up literature to the world (…) It seems to me that immigrant writing does that more dramatically than most other forms (…) if you want to take up the old cliché that life is a journey, which it is in a way, we’re all migrants through our lives. So immigrant literature is maybe a synecdoche of the entire enterprise of being human.”

—Steven G. Kellman, Publishers Weekly

Submissions for the 2026 prize are now closed. Submissions for the 2027 prize will open from January through May, 2027.

Beginning in 2025, the prize no longer alternates between fiction and non-fiction, but accepts submissions in both genres each year.

Prize Philosophy

The ethos of the modern world is defined by immigrants. Their stories have always been an essential component of our cultural consciousness, from Isaac Bashevis Singer to Isabel Allende, from Milan Kundera to Yiyun Li. In novels, short stories, memoirs, and works of journalism, immigrants have shown us what resilience and dedication we’re capable of, and have expanded our sense of what it means to be global citizens. In these times of intense xenophobia, it is more important than ever that these boundary-crossing stories reach the broadest possible audience.

With that in mind, we are proud to present the Kellman Prize for Immigrant Literature. We are looking for extraordinary unpublished submissions from emerging immigrant writers of sharp, culture-straddling writing that addresses identity in a global age. Each year, a distinguished panel of judges will select a winning manuscript to be published by Restless Books. We can’t wait to read and share what the new voices of the world have to say.

Previous winners

“Few literary prizes are devoted to the celebration of immigrant writing. Fewer still are dedicated to providing a platform for immigrant writers by publishing their work. Chief among these is the Restless Books Prize for New Immigrant Writing . . . In Restless Books, writers have found a press that champions new voices that push boundaries of form and content.”

Guidelines and eligibility

The Kellman Prize for Immigrant Literature accepts unpublished adult fiction and nonfiction submissions each year. Submissions in both genres must be complete. Fiction submissions can take the form of a novel or a book-length collection of short stories or some creative combination of the two. Nonfiction submissions can take the form of narrative nonfiction, memoir, polemic essay, a collection of essays, or some creative combination of these.

  • All submissions must be in English

  • Candidates must be first-generation residents of their country. “First-generation” can refer either to people born in another country who relocated, or to residents of a country with parents who were born elsewhere

  • Candidates must be over the age of eighteen at the time of submission

  • Fiction and nonfiction candidates must not have previously published a book-length work in English in the genre in which they’re applying. This includes self-published work and work published in English outside of North America. We encourage applicants to look at the other titles Restless has published, as well as the work of previous contest winners, to get a sense of our lines of work

  • We will accept only one submission per candidate per submission period. Submissions must be submitted under the author’s real name, though they may be published under a pseudonym. Agented submissions are welcome*

  • Candidates may not submit the same manuscript for the Prize in subsequent years unless specifically invited to do so by Restless Books

  • Restless reserves the right to invite writers to submit for the Prize

  • Restless reserves the right to consider any Prize submission for publication

  • The winning manuscript will be published by Restless Books in paperback, electronic, and audio formats. Restless Books reserves world (translation) rights

  • By applying, candidates agree to travel for festivals or awards related to the Prize, should they win

  • Submitted manuscripts may be simultaneously under consideration for publication by other publishing houses. However, please be considerate of the judges’ time and withdraw the submission immediately if it is accepted elsewhere. Once a manuscript is selected as the winner of the Prize, Restless will ask that the manuscript be withdrawn from consideration elsewhere. A publishing contract between the winning author and Restless Books must be signed before the winner is announced

  • Restless Books does not publish work created by non-human means. All submissions must be the author’s own original composition. Any use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLM) in the creation, translation, research, or editing of a manuscript must be explicitly disclosed and appropriately cited.

* Please note that while Restless Books welcomes all submissions for the Prize, we do not accept unsolicited manuscripts for our regular publishing program.
