In the fall of 2018, we launched the Restless Books Immigrant Writing Workshop with the inaugural set of sessions held in conjunction with the New York Public Library at their Mid-Manhattan-42nd Street branch. The workshops, which are conducted in English, allow participants in a small group setting to both practice literacy and speaking skills and deepen their connection with their local community. Led by experienced teachers, the participants read books provided free of charge, respond to short immigrant narratives and engage in writing exercises.
This exciting new program aims to help immigrant communities develop their voices, self-confidence, and self-esteem. And we believe we are off to a great start! Here are just a few snippets from the enthusiastic testimonials we collected from our first round of participants:
“I really enjoyed it and feel so grateful to Alejandra, Vilma and NYPL♥.”
“I like that published work was used as a format to motivate and teach the intricacies of writing.”
Why did you attend this workshop? “To expand my experience; to try story writing.”
